The United Nation's Rural Electrification Program is a project that is working to give renewable electricity to rural areas of third world countries such as India, Botswana, and most parts of the Sarahan region. The main power source being provided are solar panels for individual homes. The UN is targeting mainly poor, female run households. The power that would be given to these families would replace the use of firewood, kerosene, and certain types of biomass, cutting down on the major amount of greenhouse gas that is being released. Solar power would save families thousands of dollars and give the mother more time to get a job, increasing the standard of living. 88 villages in Botswana were among the first to try the new system, and the goal of the project is to have at least 65,000 rural homes with power.
